Use your own artillery to kill them before they can attack you or rush them with units that have defense against range attacks / high defense and use the terrain.

Or... use half artillery and half rogues. The computer will shoot your four rogues first, doing no damage while you kill at least two of the enemy, mop up in the next battle round... Works for me..
