Is there a way to demolish buildings that are no longer usefull. I built some buildings early on and need to get rid of them for higher level buildings.

There is indeed! 
Bottom left of the screen, to the right of the 'buildings' button there is another button called 'Tools'.
If you click on that then a menu opens from which you can move or delete buildings.
With the coming update however, this will change. After tomorrow the menu will open at the top of your screen when you click on the buildings menu.

i cant seem to find they demolish button now either
i looked at the top of the bulding menu and dont see it their either?

the update moved the demolish buttom to the top of the screen under forge points ... you only see it while you have the build screen open

It's called Sell, not demolish. But, it's better than demolishing because you get some money and supplies back..
