I get slaughtered every time I play QI .. I can NEVER get past the first node. Can anyone point me to a guide or at least something that can help me? Thanks.

Finish your settlements, whether you like them or not. If possible, focus in on a particular color of boost, Blue or Red when doing your settlements. When finished, cycle thru a settlement which will give an ascended version of a boost you want, Red or Blue. Ascend that building perpetually. Fight regularly in GBG and GE. Both give QI boost buildings. Progressively build your Q-Settlement and learn as you go. I don't follow any guides, yet I am able to fight every level in both my cities.

I don't begrudge anyone who prefers using guides, I am just saying they are unnecessary in order to compete. There are several out there if you want them. Ask in your guild, friends or even in the vaunted global chat. It takes time and patience, but it is worth the effort.

I hated using the guides. Before QI opens for the season ascend any buildings you have that give QI boosts you want like qi goods and units and coins and supplies. I only ascend those that give blue boosts as i normally fight blue nodes. I only build the cheapest and most expensive houses and supply buildings, never the middle one. Irush my 1st villa and goat farm with shards, rarely any of the rest. I build cheap if i can't afford expensive and make sure my settlement is happy. I only buy 1 expansion with shards but i suppose many buy more. I buy 4 with goods. I only buy blue boost decos since i only fight blue.

A coin QI building like a Harvest Hub lets you plant lots of roof tile houses. Just remember to collect and then delete them before collecting from the rest of your settlement. It gives you a lot more action points per hour like that and it only matters if your city is unhappy when you collect from it.
