Welcome to the Higher Age Units Guide! One of the common questions that appears on this forum is that of how to fight better. My solution? Getting higher aged units. These units can give the player a huge advantage in PvP (both offense and defense), GE, and GBG, among other aspects of the game.
Note that these strategies can often be costly, especially if the player is planning on negotiating the Continent Map rather than fighting. Also, due to the long time it can take to scout sectors, be prepared to go slowly on the tech tree when trying to get higher era units. This strategy is generally more useful for campers rather than tech tree racers for this reason. Some story quests require technologies to be researched. If you don’t save enough techs, you could get blocked.
These higher-aged units can be obtained in generally one of two ways: Bonus and Story Quests. In the chart below, you can see which aged units you can receive based on the age of your city.
Something you should know before trying to receive these units is the requirements for getting them. Many of the story questlines require technologies to be researched to continue with no alternative. As such it makes sense to plan ahead to make sure you can get the units before you start preparing to go for them. In the chart below, you can see which techs are needed for which age's storyline.

¹ EMA, HMA, and OF and above can not receive higher age units so are not shown on the chart. Likewise, the BA story is not shown since there are no useful troops.
² Must be a military technology.
³ An additional tech needs to be researched if the player has not yet researched Military Tactics.
⁴ Suggested route that avoids triggering the InA Bonus questline. You need 2 military, 1 residential, and 1 production technologies.
⁵ Depends on the PE troops you want. See Part 2 for more details on this. In terms of InA tech requirements, 1-2 of these can be completed while in CA.
⁶ The story is almost entirely skipped.
⁷ The TE story is optional. See Part 3 for more details.
⁸ Only 2 techs are needed before receiving Hover Tanks.
⁹ Using Combination Strategy for less techs. See Part 4 for more details.
Some abbreviations/terms will be used in this guide, which can be found in a list below. I will also respond to questions using the same abbreviations and terms to avoid possible confusion.

They loop in a never-ending cycle. Note that you are currently limited to 2000 aborted RQs per day. Tech Blocker - A story quest that requires you to research a technology or move up an age to be able to complete it in some fashion
I also recommend reading through the entire guide section on the units you want to receive before pursuing those units. It can be easy to make a mistake, and knowing the steps beforehand can help reduce that chance.
As one last note before the guide, be careful with these units. You can only get them once. If they die in battle and you forget to revive them with diamonds, there is no getting them back. Take every precaution not to lose them, as they can be a huge advantage. Use them wisely.
With all the introduction out of the way, this guide will be broken down into several parts, based on each age of units that the player can receive. The contents can be found below: Part 1: Early Middle Age to Industrial Age Troops Part 2: PE to the PME Blocker Part 3: Contemporary Era and Tomorrow Era Troops Part 4: The Future to Oceanic Future Troops Part 5: Strategy and Technical Info Part 6: The Video Guide Part 7: Author’s Notes
This section covers the simplest methods for getting higher age troops in lower ages, being:
EMA Troops in BA or IA
CA Troops in LMA
InA Troops in CA
Early Middle Age Troops
You can get a small selection of EMA troops while in IA or BA, as shown below.
Troops Available
Techs Needed to Reach
2x Legionnaire
Bronze Age only: 1 Tech
Iron Age: Part of IA Story
2x Armored Infantry
Bronze Age: 2 Techs + Above Iron Age: 1 - 2 Techs
The EMA troops can only be obtained via the EMA Bonus Questline, which is unlocked after the player completes the IA Story Quest "Makatba" and conquers the first EMA province, Dunkenwald. The EMA Bonus Sectors follow the mountains near the IA and BA provinces on the cMap (see screenshot below).
Fighting these sectors can be tricky, as the player is up against Barbarians. These troops boost their allies after they die, so do not auto battle unless you have a really high attack boost. Instead, manually fight and take each barbarian down to a few health points. Then, you can eliminate them one by one. This saves you having to deal with ever-stronger enemies. Of course, you can always negotiate, and if you aren't great at manually battling or have low attack boosts, then I'd recommend this! There's no difference in rewards depending on whether you fight or negotiate. As such, check out the chart below to see the costs for goods for negotiation of the provinces.

To get the EMA troops, the questline requires the player to research one or two technologies, so reserve some for this questline. Two technologies are only needed if the player has not yet unlocked Military Tactics and therefore can not do PvP fights (one quest requires plundering buildings or researching a technology). Note that this questline will not take over an RQ slot, so it can be completed at the player's leisure.
If you are in the Bronze Age, for the IA questline you will have to research a military tech, bringing your total up to three techs needed. You will also get 2 Legionnaires (heavy units) from the IA questline along the way.
Additionally, you can receive the Barbarian units which appear on the EMA Bonus map, albeit only while in EMA. All you need is an event building or special building that gives units, such as the Governor's Villa or the Feudal Japan Settlement's Timeless Dojo. Over time, you will randomly get some of these units as a collection. They are pretty weak, however, so they are not really useful. However, it is fun just to be able to have them as a collector's item.
Colonial Age Troops
Unfortunately, there are no higher era troops available to players in EMA or HMA. However, you can get a pretty decent number of troops from CA, as shown below.
Troops Available
Techs Needed to Reach
2x Field Guns
5x Grenadiers
2x Musketeers
None
To get the 2 Musketeers, all you have to do is complete either the story quest "Buy Her Freedom" or "Fight for Freedom," which are towards the end of the LMA story, after scouting Ravens Creek (the first LMA Bonus Province). You will get one quest or the other, and they don't really differ in requirements. You will get the musketeers from either.
The rest of the troops are obtainable through the LMA Bonus Questline. This questline only triggers when the player’s city is LMA or higher and has completed the quest "The Fair Maiden". This questline will “take over” a recurring quest slot until it is completed, and takes place on the campaign map between the LMA and CA areas on the map, shown below. Additionally, if you scout ahead on the cMap, make sure not to take Grand Gap. If you do, the LMA Bonus Questline will not be triggered.
Make sure that you do not take both Ashcrook and Queenshope (see image above) until the quest "Force Ludwig Out." Otherwise, you will not get three of the five grenadiers from the questline.
It doesn't matter whether you fight or negotiate in terms of which troops you'll receive. As such, see the negotiation costs for the provinces in the chart down below.

There are no technology requirements for this questline, other than placing buildings that are from LMA.
Be aware, though, that the bonus questline gives diamonds as one of its final rewards. By aborting the quest “Dungeon or Death Sentence,” the player receives ten more diamonds as a reward, making a total of fifty. If this quest is fulfilled, the player receives only forty diamonds.
Industrial Age Troops
Starting with the InA cMap, getting troops begins to get trickier. Actions by the player on the cMap can greatly affect rewards and troops. Additionally, the InA Bonus Questline can be triggered in CA, but can only be completed in InA. This means that accidentally triggering the InA Bonus Questline will permanently take over a RQ slot until it is completed. However, by following the optimal route, you can get the units listed below.

In order to avoid loss of an RQ slot, negotiate southern provinces and attack the northern ones. To gain more diamonds later on, be sure to negotiate any sector with natives defending it. Per the strategy of negotiating the southern provinces, the below chart shows the costs for doing so, including Las Penas, even though you shouldn't pay those full costs as you shouldn't be taking it fully.

*You won't take this full province, so the actual costs will be less
The map of the InA story can be seen below, with the southern provinces that you should negotiate in green and the northern ones which you should fight in red, should you want to avoid the Bonus Questline. However, even though it is marked green, avoid taking Las Penas if possible. If you take Las Penas the Bonus Questline
will
be triggered. In fact, I would recommend doing everything possible to not take Las Penas until you are in InA. Do only what is necessary – don't work ahead, and be slow in researching technology, once again, only doing what is necessary.
Since the InA questline can be confusing, I've made the flowchart-ish thing below that shows all the possible routes for the InA questline, with the rewards and decisions shown to help you plan. Note that you can only avoid triggering the InA Bonus Questline (which you can only complete in InA) by either negotiating all provinces or by fighting the northern and negotiating the southern provinces. If triggering the Bonus Questline is not a problem for you, then you will be able to plan out your own route.
Click image to view larger. Starred options are recommended.
You might notice that the info above only shows how to get 3 of the 6 available Rifleman (ranged units). To get the remaining Riflemen, you must negotiate sectors of Okahe, then abort a RQ. Doing so gives you the side quest "Guns for the Natives." Completing that then gives you the quest "The Natives' Support" which yields the 3 additional Riflemen. See the negotiation cost chart above for the goods you'll need to do so.
In the Colonial Age, you can receive some PE troops as well. However, this is covered in
Part 2
below as it requires some more thought and preparation.
Lastly, while you can only get them while in InA, you can receive the Braves units which appear on the InA map.
As mentioned in the previous part, you can get some PE troops in CA, while a greater number can be won after moving to InA. With a varying numbers of troops gained in CA and techs needed to do so, I've broken the following troops and techs chart down into each option's maximum troops, showing where the farthest you can go in CA is. If you don't reach the PE map while you're in CA and instead only make it in InA, then just ignore the CA cutoffs, as you'll be able to continue through the story.

*If you follow what the guide tells you to do. If you don't and choose to negotiate, you'll need an additional 1 Cultural Tech, and later on, if you fight, you'll need 1 Tech of any type.
It might still seem a little confusing, so let's break down each route. If you are in CA, you can choose to go for the Rapid Fire Cannon (RFC) now and get more PE troops in InA, or you can get the Snipers and Tanks now and miss out on the RFC. If you're in InA, I recommend just getting the RFC, as you'll need the same number of techs to research and I found the RFC to be handy fighting on the map. The specific paths needed for each troop type are found below.
For all of these, you must take the first province on the map, Havre, and scout the three provinces around it, completing the story quests as you go. However, depending on how you take these provinces, the story (and rewards) will change. It does not matter if you fight or negotiate Havre. In the image below, Omoien and Uxrow are highlighted in yellow, while Kriegreich is highlighted in blue. Havre is highlighted in white.
Now, the specific unit paths:
Negotiate sectors when prompted to take sectors in the story quests. It does not matter which sectors you negotiate, as long as you do not fight at this stage.
To get the conscripts, you must both research a technology that does not unlock a military building or expansion, AND later on research a technology that unlocks a decoration, so be sure to save two techs that fit those descriptions for this purpose.
This is as far as you can go in CA.
Negotiate sectors of either Uxrow or Omoien, and keep negotiating until you reach the quest Blood in the Trenches, where you are asked to take two sectors. Here, fight sectors of Kriegreich to complete this quest. Complete the next few story quests, and you will get the snipers.
To do so requires researching a technology that does not unlock a military building or expansion, AND later on researching a technology that unlocks a decoration, so be sure to save two techs that fit those descriptions for this purpose.
This is as far as you can go in CA.
Negotiate sectors of Kriegreich, and keep negotiating until you reach the quest Blood in the Trenches, where you are asked to take two sectors. Here, fight sectors of either Uxrow or Omoein to complete this quest. Complete the next few story quests, and you will get the tanks.

This is as far as you can go in CA.
To get the Rapid Fire Cannon, the player must fight any of the sectors and research a military technology.
However, which province(s) you fight to do this will determine which units (either tanks or snipers) you can get once you age up to InA. If you would prefer to gain 2 Tanks (heavy units) later on, then take Uxrow or Omoien by fighting, or if you would prefer 2 Snipers (ranged units), take Kriegreich by fighting.
This is as far as you can go in CA.
If you are in InA, complete the next few story quests, and you'll get the 2 Tanks or 2 Snipers, depending on your choice above, and this will require researching a tech that unlocks a decoration.
The strategy of getting Snipers and Tanks in CA was kindly provided by @Draqone, and their original post(s) on this topic can be found on the EN forums [here].
After getting the troops noted above (and being in InA), you'll be able to get the Armored Car after researching some more techs and also by having 2 Police Stations, however, in total for the questline, you'll need 3 Police Stations built. There are only two ways to get these buildings: either by directly researching them on the InA Tech Tree, or by winning them as prizes in events. Why wouldn't you just research the tech? Well, Police Stations are pretty far along the InA tech tree, and if you are trying to conserve tech researching now to get more higher age troops (for example, if you haven't saved many techs to research in previous ages), it may be wise to be patient and try to win them. However, this strategy can take a long time, so be prepared to wait. You will also be required to place down some Old Walls, but these are easily obtainable from earlier tech researches that can be planned towards with some care, or also being won from events, similarly to the Police Stations.
Additionally, if you are negotiating the map, you will be required to research 1 Cultural Tech for the quest "Freedom of the Press." Likewise, if you fight a sector for the quest "Don't Mention the War," you will have to research an extra tech (of any type). As such, negotiate a sector for this quest.
As you may need to negotiate some provinces of this age, the negotiation costs for all PE provinces can be found in the chart below.

The Modern Era lets us get even more troops, specifically the ones shown in the chart below.
Troops Available
Techs Required
2x Battle Tank
7x Bazooka Teams
2x Mechanized Infantry
2x Paratrooper
1 Tech*
*You can skip this tech requirement by negotiating Natsuishu, thereby making it unlikely you'll receive the full 7 Bazooka Teams available
On the Modern Era map, it is important to fight at least one sector of the first two provinces to receive the most troops. This can trigger the side quest "Rin Gozen's Warriors," which yields 4 Bazooka Teams (light units) after completing the story quest "Rin Gozen's Honor." The early acquisition of these Bazookas is very helpful in fighting the remainder of the map. After completing the western portion of the ME cMap, the player receives 3 more Bazooka Teams (light units). Additionally, by fighting sectors of Toimuro and Hiromaguchi you will gain an additional 2 Mechanized Infantry (fast units) and 2 Battle Tanks (heavy units). These four provinces are marked on the map below, with the first two being marked in green and Toimuro and Hiromaguchi marked in red.
If you are strapped for techs though and would rather potentially miss out on 3 Bazooka Teams and instead go for higher age troops, make sure to negotiate Natsuishu (the second province) to remove the tech research from this age's story questline. To do this, see the chart below for the goods you'll need.

Postmodern Era Troops
There's a great deal of PE troops available, as shown in the chart below.

Early on in the PME cMap, the "Predator" side quest can be triggered, which results in the player receiving one Commando (light unit). To reach this quest, the player goes through a short side-quest line (abortable). It starts with "Guerilla Warfare." Following this quest is "Supply Chain" and finally "Predator." While the exact trigger conditions are not known, it seems that completing a PME side quest and having sectors on the PME map scouted can trigger this.
To get 5 MG teams (ranged units) from the story quests early in the PME map, you must:
Negotiate with Che for any sector
Take only one out of two of Che's provinces (Rung Chien Dau or Cai Chet Nui)
Take a complete province next to the provinces above
Only negotiate Che's provinces. Don't fight him
Following through the questline will yield the MG teams, via "Business with Che," giving 2 MG teams (ranged units), and "More Business with Che," giving 3 MG teams (ranged units). The negotiation costs for these two provinces are shown in the chart below.

In addition, while not confirmed on all the triggers yet, to trigger the quest "Che, Again" which yields 2 Commandos (light units), you must have not completely taken both of Che's provinces (Rung Chien Dau or Cai Chet Nui) by the time you've finished getting the MG teams as explained above. These provinces are marked in green on the map below.
Later in the questline, the player receives 4 Commandos (light units) from the quest "Ships in the Night." If you're really low on techs (as in, having none left), you can get this quest by pushing the eastern (upper) half of the PME map first, as the western (lower) half of the map will require a tech.
To receive the 2 Rocket Artillery, you must abort the story quest "Truth or Dare," and shortly after you are tech blocked (whether or not you complete or abort Truth or Dare) However, this might not be the best decision. You can leave these troops behind and instead skip the PME tech blocker, and go on to win even more higher age troops, up to OF ones.
Skipping the PME Tech Blocker
Despite there being a PME tech blocker at the end of the PME story, it is possible to skip this blocker to get units higher than PME while still in InA (or higher ages too). It is actually pretty simple how this is done, but you can mess up at any point, so past this you must be extremely careful.
First, don't complete the PME story. Stop the questline at the abortable quest "Your Choice: Truth or Dare." If at any point past this section you collect or abort this quest, your next story quest will take you back to PME and you will be tech blocked. After you get tech blocked, you are stuck on the story until you age up to PME with no way around it. As far as you are concerned, this quest is locked in place forever. Just don't touch it. At all. Don't abort it, complete it, mouse over it, etc.
To get further troops then, we have to get the story to jump to another quest slot (see Part 5 for the technical reasons this is possible). We can do this by still keeping "Truth or Dare" uncompleted and progressing onto further campaign maps. Then, by aborting or completing a side or recurring quest that isn't "Truth or Dare," we're able to get the game's story to jump to that quest slot.
Depending on which map you have reached by the time you abort/complete a side/recurring quest that isn't "Truth or Dare," you can control which age's story you jump to. Regardless of your choice, in an age lower than PME, you'll receive a single quest from the CE story. If you happen to abort/complete a side/recurring quest before reaching the age of the map you want troops from, you'll want to keep this CE quest uncompleted until you reach the map you want. Otherwise, you can "lose" the story quests, which can be extremely confusing.
I've broken down the various paths you could take in the spoilers below (just to keep this section from being a massive wall of text).
Regardless of path, you'll have to scout the CE map as shown below in order to avoid the CE tech blocker quest, which falls at the end of the CE story. Don't scout the provinces marked in red.
If you want TE troops, you will have to spend an extra tech. However, they can be pretty useful to fight the FE map instead of using PME troops.
To get TE troops, scout the TE map, but don't abort/complete a side/recurring quest that isn't "Truth or Dare" yet! Instead, scout the two provinces marked below in green (Torrinhos and Villariba) and take them, but only scout the province marked in yellow (Rio Roxo). Then you are clear to abort/complete a side/recurring quest that isn't "Truth or Dare."
If you fully take Rio Roxo before the TE story is caught up to this point, you will miss out on most of the available TE troops.
If instead you want to skip straight to FE troops, and save yourself a tech research, scout the TE map as shown below, and scout the first FE province. Be sure to negotiate this first province, otherwise you will cost yourself some FE troops. The negotiation costs for this are given in the FE troops section of Part 4. Don't scout the provinces marked in red. Once on the FE map, you are clear to abort/complete a side/recurring quest that isn't "Truth or Dare."
Note that if you are in PME currently, you can still use this trick to skip the PME blocker and save yourself from having to research nearly all the techs available in PME to complete the PME questline.
This section could be very different for different players, depending on your choices in the previous part (TE troops or no) and whether you are in PME or not.
If you're in PME, you can actually receive some CE troops, while it seems that other ages are not able to do so reliably (you can get the Attack Helicopters discussed below in ME).
If you're not in PME, you'll get one CE quest and then go right to either the TE or FE section.
CE Troops
There's a decent number of CE troops available, however they actually are not won through the story questline. As you progress through the questline, you'll be able to trigger side quests (as long as you are in PME) that give the CE units, so be sure to regularly abort/complete side/recurring quests as you go through the story. The total available troops can be seen below.

1 Tech (for story)
If you are in PME, you will receive the full CE questline, which includes the CE tech blocker quests. To avoid this, you must scout the cMap as shown below, skipping two of the provinces. The CE story will ask you to scout one of the skipped provinces, but this is fine. Just don't take it! If you're not in PME, you want to scout the map as shown regardless.
Skip the provinces that are marked in red.
If you're in PME and want TE troops, finish the CE story and continue on to the TE map. This is the only way to get the full amount of TE troops available. However, if you'd rather skip the TE map and save a tech, scout the TE map as shown below (skipping the provinces in red) and negotiate the first province of FE (costs given in Part 4) before finishing the CE story, and you should jump to the FE story.
Skip the provinces marked in red.
Also, note that by negotiating all 4 of the Sheik's provinces (Amaryah City, Khail, Batif, and Hafar Al Karak), you will receive more diamonds from the CE storyline. These provinces are highlighted in green on the map below, with their negotiation costs also given.

TE Troops
You can win at least one of every TE troop available in PME (if you've completed the CE story) and less if not. Regardless the path you took to get here, these are the troops you can receive:
If you completed the CE story in PME, or are in CE, you should be able to receive the entire squad of troops available; simply follow through the questline as it is presented to you, and don't work ahead of it. Also, make sure to fight sectors of Torrinhos to gain an extra 2 Anti-Materiel Snipers and 2 Ultra AP.
If you're instead attempting to get TE troops in a lower age than PME, if you haven't already, abort/complete a side/recurring quest other than "Truth or Dare" and complete the CE quest you get only once you've reached Rio Roxo by scouting the map as shown below, taking the green provinces and only scouting Rio Roxo in yellow. Hopefully at this point, you should receive the TE story and can continue through it. After getting the questline, also take Bajatai (below Rio Roxo and Villariba) to get the quests that give you the 2 Combat Drones. If at any point the story quests disappear, just keep moving on the map and abort/complete side/recurring quests that aren't "Truth or Dare" as you do, and hopefully the story should reappear.
Also, as a side note, a TE cultural building, the Surveillance Nexus, can be given from a side quest after taking Rio Roxo in ages at least as early as InA!
These are the fun troops! The most powerful, most useful, and hardest troops to get (due to them being at the end of the story).
FE Troops (Hover Tanks)
The list for all FE troops available can be found below. However, there are some caveats. It assumes you've maximized the units possible from the explanations described in the rest of this section.

One of the most powerful units you can gain from higher ages is the Future Era's Hover Tank. It has stealth on plains, hits hard, and has the ability Force Field. This enables the Hover Tank to take 2 HP less damage per hit (minimum 1), making it able to take much less damage than other units in a battle. From the FE story, you can get a maximum of 4, with 1 guaranteed and the remaining 3 based on your choices on the FE map.
Once you start the FE story, to get the extra 3 Hover Tanks, be sure to negotiate Agadar, the first province owned by Joy Danba. Then, later on the cMap, be sure to negotiate in Kalabuye (the second province owned by Joy Danba) and to not completely take either Bisoraba or Kalabuye before receiving the 3 Hover Tanks quest "Greetings from a Friend." Danba's provinces are marked in green on the map below.
The green provinces are Joy Danba's and these MUST be negotiated to receive an extra 3 Hover Tanks. The yellow province, Jak, must be negotiated to avoid an extra tech research quest.
Once you get the Hover Tanks, it no longer matters whether you fight or negotiate the rest of Kalabuye. However, I've included the full costs for it as well as Agadar in the negotiation cost chart below. I've also included the costs for negotiating Jak, which will remove the need to research an extra tech, explained further in this section.

There are two avoidable tech research quests in the FE story that can cut down your tech requirements down from 5 to only 3, as shown in the troops chart from earlier. The first is required if you fight any of Jak, so be sure to negotiate it (see negotiation costs above). The second is given to you if you take the province Kolaburg fully before the quest "Down the Rabbit Hole." So in short, negotiate Jak and don't fully take Kolaburg before "Down the Rabbit Hole" unless you want to waste two techs.
Also, be sure to take sectors of Fort Buntu by fighting, since this will yield 2 Rail Gun (artillery units) and 2 Satellite Spotter (ranged units). If the player receives the quest "An Old Acquaintance," they will receive an additional 3 Exoskeleton Soldier (light units). It is not quite known how this quest can exactly be triggered, or what causes it not to be triggered. I got this quest when negotiating all the FE provinces.
After the story quests jump to FE, the story follows along normally. The player is not tech blocked after they skip the CE blocker until they reach the end of the OF story, discussed in the sections down below. The only real limiter past this point is the number of techs the player has left to research for quests.
Note: After receiving all the troops, you'll have to research a last tech for the end of the FE story, before moving on to AF.
Arctic Future Troops
A negotiation route on the AF cMap will yield slightly less troops, but also require one less technology to be researched. If a player forgot to leave enough technologies open to research, it is wiser to negotiate to get to the better OF troops. However, if the player has enough technologies fighting will yield more higher era troops overall. The AF troops gained per techs researched can be seen below, separated by the method obtained.
Despite the chart above, there is a better combination route of fighting and negotiating that can give you the same amount of troops as the fighting route, but with only one less tech being needed. This strategy is the best route for most players. Less goods needed, one less tech needed for research, and the maximum number of troops is incredibly helpful. It's explained below, and a big thank you to @NickGlover314 and @Ben Trovato for finding and refining this strategy. The troop breakdown per tech for this route can be found below.
So how do we do this combination strategy? See the spoiler below for all the details.
To get all the troops but only need four techs, you must do the following:
Negotiate: The first 5 Native-owned provinces (Nutarniq, Iluliaq, Tuklavik, Ananevut and Qaniit)
Fight at least one sector of each: Nilak and Nunataq
Either Fight or Negotiate: Everything else
You can see the above information in the map below. Negotiate the green provinces, and fight the red ones.
The negotiation costs for the recommended provinces to negotiate for this better route are listed below, but not for every AF province (because there are a lot of them).
On the OF map, it does not matter whether you fight or negotiate. The troops gained are the same either way, and there is no difference in diamonds from the questline either. Additionally, since some sectors will eventually cost promethium and orichalcum to negotiate, and those can only be gained in earlier ages by spending diamonds, fighting will be much cheaper on the OF map. As with the AF troops, the OF troops will be presented by troops per tech researched, as seen in the chart below. There's no negotiation cost chart for this one because of the diamond cost and way too many provinces.

After reaching the quest "Persuasion," the player becomes tech blocked until they reach OF. After this, the player can get no more higher aged troops.
Returning to the PME Questline
If the player so chooses, after receiving all the troops that they want from the questline, if they are in or below PME, it is possible to return to the PME questline rather than being stuck at the end of the OF story by simply aborting or completing the quest "Truth or Dare." After doing so and completing one story quest, the player will receive the quests that follow Truth or Dare.
Beware though: You can NOT undo this. It is a one time thing. Just like if you accidentally complete Truth or Dare along the way to higher troops, you can not go back to where you were until you reach at least PME and are able to complete the PME tech blocker, which requires techs from the end of the PME tech tree.
If you choose to do this, the best time to abort or complete (see paragraph below) Truth or Dare is actually a little past the last OF troops, on the quest Ryan's Goal, which gives diamonds, and comes nearly right before the OF tech blocker, Persuasion. The list of quests between these two points in the story can be found below. Abort or complete Truth or Dare before completing one of these to maximize your unit gain.
Ryan's Goal (Complete this, Abort ToD after this point)
Onwards
Expanding
Unclaimed
Seeking
Second Chance
Persuasion (TECH BLOCKER - If you reach this, it's too late)
Additionally, if the player has not completed the conditions of "Truth or Dare," most likely the "pay" part of it, then it is still possible to abort the quest. In this case, it is also possible for the player to receive the 2 PME Rocket Artillery (artillery units) from the PME story. However, if at any point the player does complete both conditions of the quest, it becomes impossible to abort the quest and thus you can not receive the artillery.
Want to dive deeper into extra strategies and tips, or learn a little more about the technical info behind getting higher age troops? This is the spot to do it.
The InA Worst Case Scenario
Everyone loves higher age troops, but a lot of techs are needed for the highest. So what do you do if you wake up in the morning with your head on fire and decide to try for Hover Tanks when you're sitting in CA with all your techs researched from your current and previous ages? Your only choice is to age up to the next age (InA) and try to use your techs carefully.
With that in mind, I've broken down the InA tree for maximizing higher age troops, assuming you're at the start of the PE story and have not saved any techs. With that in mind, it's also assuming you want to go along the route of winning Police Stations and Old Walls from events and GE.
Similarly, if you'd rather not wait to get police stations and would instead like to just research them, you can do so with the tech tree shown below. You will miss out on a lot of AF/OF troops as compared to the route above, however.
With both of these routes, you want to skip getting a Rapid Fire Cannon from PE (see Part 2), and also skip TE troops (see Part 3).
cMap Tips
Getting higher aged units depends almost entirely on how far you are able to push the cMap to keep progressing the story quests. However, as the higher aged maps get harder and harder both for fighting and negotiating, the questions arises as to what the best way to complete the cMaps are, as well as how best to build one's city to help.
~Up to FE, negotiation can be easier than fighting. Goods for ages lower than FE are usually cheap, and can be traded down if needed. However, in the OF map and beyond, negotiating all the provinces will require spending diamonds. This is because the provinces will start requiring special goods, such as Promethium and Orichalcum to negotiate. Other than a small amount of Promethium from the AF cMap, these goods are impossible to obtain in lower ages. This is rather unfortunate, as these higher maps are the very ones that one would wish to negotiate! One positive, though, is that negotiating the cMaps lets you plan ahead for what resources you need and you need not worry about not having enough attack strength.
As such, the easiest way to progress on the campaign map is to fight. Your goal should be to build as strong of a city for attack strength as possible. The higher your boosts, the easier it will be to fight higher cMaps as well as higher GBG attrition levels. However, the general advice of good fighting buildings don't necessarily apply. In most cases, you will not benefit from a GB such as the Arctic Orangery, as its boost only applies to units of the same age as your own. Similarly, the Virgo Project can become extremely useful as the maps get more and more difficult, especially if you choose to push onwards onto the VF, SAM, or higher maps to get more expansions.
However, be careful! Whether you're fighting using your higher age units or normal units of your age, the cMap AI can and will target "normal" units first instead of rogues, which is different from the city defense, PvP, and the other fighting AIs of the game. In higher age cMaps, enemy units might be able to move before you are (to find the order of unit movements, check out @Qaccy's guide on units' initiative stat), which can eliminate your normal units before you are able to even do anything in a fight. Try to use multiple "normal" units and fewer rogues.
Le Château?
While progressing through higher aged questlines, you'll often either need (for negotiations) or receive lots of goods from higher ages, as well as other rewards such as medals and even diamonds. To make the most of these rewards, you can build and level a Chateau Frontenac as high as you can. Especially when working on getting AF or OF units, you can gain enough goods to get a full kit for a great building from one of those ages!
If you're planning in advance to pursue higher age troops, definitely consider also leveling your CF in the meantime. It can make an incredible difference.
The Aftermath
This section covers what to do with your troops after you've received them.
Once you receive your units, you have to know how to use them to the best effect, otherwise you went through all that work for nothing.
Of course, you'll be using these units to fight, and that means that they will have the potential to take damage and die. If the units die, and you do not spend diamonds to revive them, you will not be able to get those units back. Some players have been lucky in having support giving them back their units, but do not rely on support to be a safety net for your units. As such, fight with your higher age units assuming that they are the only ones that you will receive. Don't take stupid chances with them.
The good news is that if you are using higher age units, they will be stronger than normal units and so harder to kill. Even still though, the minimum damage a unit can take is 1, regardless of boosts, so even if your unit takes a single hit, it will take damage that can add up over multiple battles. This means that you should avoid battling with your higher age units heavily damaged. That sounds obvious, but it's still worth saying. Additionally, you may have to try different combinations. For example, FE's Hover Tanks can be super useful, but may not always be what you need to beat a battle without heavy losses. If you're ever worried, you can try manually fighting to surrender if your units are in danger.
Higher age troops are most useful in the earliest ages you can receive them, such as using OF troops in InA, but can still be powerful (just not as much) in later ages, like PME or ME. This lends higher age troops to be great for players looking to camp in an age, however, they can also be useful for players looking to race on the tech tree and skip multiple ages, as they will still be able to fight and compete while generating units of their current age. Additionally, they can use the extra space/greater attack boosts from aging up quickly to be even stronger for that first season of GBG after aging up.
Technical Explanations
This section of the guide is my attempt at explaining how and why higher age troops can be obtained. It is technical, but I hope this explanation will clear up some of the confusion over why certain choices are made. Note that all of this is speculation and not actually based on evidence other than what can be observed in game.
First, we must understand a little basics on how quests work. It seems that quests follow a queue sort of system where upon unlocking the triggers for the quests, a list is created of the next quests to come in order. When starting a new age, for example, a bunch of side quests enter the queue for your recurring quest slots. This will be important later on.
At its heart, getting higher age troops is accomplished through two means: progressing the story questline and progressing the cMap, usually at the same time. However, when you push one further than the other, it is possible to disrupt the usual order of quests. This is because the story quests are set up in a system where they are sequential, and one comes after another progressing through the story. This sounds obvious, but there seem to be sets of quests that are chained together to happen in a certain order, with breaks between them where the questline can be disrupted. This can especially be seen in how we skip the PME tech blocker in Part 2 of the HAUG.
In the PME questline, one of the last quests, Truth or Dare, is actually a side quest, rather than a story quest. This is because it asks you to abort or complete the quest, and per the game, a story quest must be unskippable and must be completed to proceed. So for Truth or Dare to be abortable, it has to be classified as a side quest. This means that there is no actual story quest in any quest slot. Additionally, Truth or Dare is tied to the rest of the PME questline (three more quests) which includes a tech blocker. Since these quests are unable to appear before Truth or Dare is completed, this means that the PME story can not be finished until Truth or Dare is completed. It is also possible that part of the CE story is part of the linked set of quests.
When we push further on the CE cMap, this triggers a CE story quest to end up in the story quest "queue." However, since there are no other story quests in the queue ahead of it (due to Truth or Dare, being uncompleted, causing the other quests to be stuck), it becomes the next available story quest. When you abort an RQ or side quest on the TE or FE maps, the game realizes that you do not have a story quest in any of your quest slots, since Truth or Dare is a side quest, and gives you the CE quest instead (Dictator's Death). And, because of the choices made on the CE map to skip two of the provinces, the end of the CE story will not trigger, thereby avoiding the CE tech blocker. Instead, the next quests to enter the story quest queue will either be TE or FE quests, depending on your choice if you want TE troops or not.
Current Limitations
As you probably know already, the earliest we can reach the FE questline is in Industrial Age. This is because on the PE questline, there is a tech blocker that requires you to have InA Police Stations, thereby making it impossible to receive anything higher than PE units while in CA. Right now, there is no known way to get past this blocker. However, that doesn't mean that such a way doesn't exist. If there's one thing about video games, there's always a way to break them!
If you ever want to experiment, figuring out the CA blocker and working backwards from there are the current goals. I've got no ideas on what to try though, so be creative! The lower the age in which you can get hovers, the more powerful you can be! If you do find a way to do so, please share with the community so that we can all benefit. Don't waste mine or another's time with faked "proof." Expect some skepticism until a new method can be verified by another player.
Some players (mainly @FluffyPhoenix have already tried to get past the blocker by pushing all the way to the FE map while in BA, then pushing the story. However, all attempts to start in a really low age and push further have thus far have gotten stuck with the LMA blocker (build a Tower Ruin).
Welcome to the next stage of this guide! Instead of just a text/screenshot version, I'll be making videos for each age of units you can receive, with an in-depth description of how to receive the units. Also, besides just Higher Age Units Guide content, I'll be posting more Forge of Empires content. If you want to support me or be notified of new videos early, then be sure to subscribe!
EMA Units in IA
The first video! Here, I focus on how to get the EMA Armored Infantry while in BA or IA, as well as a quick rundown of all the rewards and requirements to do so.
CA Units in LMA
This video shows how to get all the CA units in LMA through the story and the LMA Bonus Questline, along with the extra rewards!
InA Units in CA
This third video covers how to get InA units in CA without triggering the InA Bonus Questline, as well as how to get extra diamonds by being nice to the natives!
As new ages are released, and if it becomes possible to again get higher era units, this guide will be updated. Additionally, as research is completed on some sections of gaining higher age units, the information will be posted here.

Yes. In fact, you can get up to OF units in PME. To get the CE troops you complete the CE map, following the story quests. However, doing so results in a tech-research quest that requires you to age up to CE to complete, thus ending your push on the cMap for troops until reaching CE.
To avoid this, you have to only take certain CE sectors and then take the first sector of the FE map. Doing so skips the tech blocker quest, the remainder of the CE questline, and the entire TE questline. However, there still seems to be some uncertainty about how to do this correctly, so I haven't yet written the section to explain it. Within a year or so, I plan on aging up to PME and attempting this with the strategy I think is most likely to succeed. If it works I'll write up the section.

Raino on YouTube just upload a video explaining how to avoid the tech block in CE to get hover tank in PME. You should check it out. I’m not interested in that as it will wipe out the whole CE and TE story quests, and it costs a lot. I’m currently in Indy, and I got the MG team, and they are amazing for Indy. Do you think I can get some anti aircraft vehicle if I age up to PME? Should I fight or negotiate certain provinces in the CE map?

If I were you I'd continue on the PME cMap to get the champ as well. But that's just my preference.
I'm not a fan of Raino, since they tend to leave out information or not tell you certain things, but most of it is accurate as far as I can tell.
You should get some AAVs (I think, not 100% sure. Once again, I haven't tested this so I can't verify it) from the cMap, and you'd want to negotiate the Sheik's provinces. You get more diamonds.

Yes, you can get AAVs. I got two, but generally, you get rewarded more if you negotiate, which I did not, so maybe you can get more. No worries to the people worrying about OF units in PME. If you don't get them then, you can get them in CE too, plus CE is much better to fight in.
