North Korea. Should we worry about them?

14 ground-based interceptors would be added to 26 already in place at Fort Greeley in Alaska as defensive measures against incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles. Another four interceptors are in place at Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, Calif. Some suggests that we should unify the Korean Peninsula by preemptively attack the N. Korean to eliminate the threat. Do you think the Chinese will do nothing if we done that? In my opinion, recent N. Korea action has China's hand behind it. They are testing the water to see how we would react to it and taking the next step.

Actually China is not happy with N. Korea's behavior as it is making THEM uncomfortable. The newest Kim is another loose cannon and he's not tempered at all which makes him dangerous and hard to control. He's trying to assert his own authority and appear strong on the world stage while his people suffer. China may not allow the U.S. to intervene, but it's getting to the point that they may do so themselves to avoid the problems that may otherwise occur.

If I was a country I would run not walk to get my hands on a nuke. And I would point it directly at the US...
It’s the only thing the republicans understand.
We won't do a thing about N Korea, because although we could kill them all they could hurt us. Coward governments don't like having their eyes scratched out.
We were the most loved country on earth we became the most hated by our own doing.
The N Koreans won't drop a nuke on us. They just want us to know how expensive it will be to do to them what we did to Iraq, and Vietnam, and on and on.
Eventually we will make a mistake, we will actually believe we can just nuke a Pakistan, N Korea etc. Then we will learn what it feels like to have bombs dropped on our home land.
How sad, to see what used to be the beacon of hope turn into the monster of oppression.
Unless we as a people controll our government we will continue to pay a greater and greater price for their arrogance and blatant disregard for humanity.

Internment camps anyone?

"Both Shin and Kang described life in the camp as defined by hunger and violence.

'Daily I saw torture, and every day in the camp I saw people dying of malnutrition and starvation. I saw lots of friends die and I almost died myself of malnutrition,' Kang recalled.

Overstepping prison rules was enough to get you killed, including not informing the guards of other prisoners' misdeeds.

Shin admits he didn't hesitate to inform a guard of his mother and brother's escape plan, and that he felt no remorse when he was forced to watch their executions.

Shin had never felt close to them or anyone else in the camp, seeing others as competitors for the tiny rations of mainly cabbage-based gruel he survived on."

I'm seeing some parallels...

This is just my opinion but...

I see no reason to be threatened by North Korea. China will keep them from doing much more than the chest pounding acts they are doing now. Understand that China and America are linked by something more powerful than nukes... money.

How many billions would China loose in a month of lost trade with the U.S. and other NATO countries if they backed North Korea in a war against anyone? I don't have the answer but my guess is the loss would bankrupt that nation (China) in just a few months and many of its people would be starving in just a short time as well because of lack of work/income. Even if the threat of sanctions against China for helping North Korea in military actions is empty (which it might be) it will be enough to persuade them otherwise.

World peace may be achieved in the next 100 years because of an one world economy. When its more prosperous to be friends and trade than it is to go to war and take over land or render a nation useless financially the reason to go to war and take over land or destroy a potential trade partner becomes quickly obsolete. When political idealism divides a nation and makes it poor or leads its people to die in wars that have no gain that too slowly becomes obsolete. These reasons for war will be gone in a short time historically speaking.

The only obstetrical that remains in the way of an united world is religious differences and terrorist activities. Hopefully these two things do not destroy us all before we start thinking of us all as just humans not Americans, Christians, Chinese, Catholics, Koreans, Muslim, Brits, Atheists French, ect... ect... ect...

Again just a thought based on my current understanding and view of the world we live in.

Many major wars were sparked (or fueled) by money, economics, trade, recession.

I would hope China, UN, Amnesty International and all the peacemaker orgs are entering into a continuous dialogue with Kim Jong-un to try and persuade him in the nicest possible way what a complete prat he is being.

People all over the world are people. Just because they speak a different language does not mean they are from another planet.
The Koreans don't want their country extinguished anymore than we do.
They do want their freedom from western oppressors wanting to dictate to them how they should run their country.
Don’t misunderstand my hunger for the truth and my despise for government as a lack of patriotism. I would gladly fight for our country. And if it came to it, I would want us to level then off the face of the earth, in a most expeditious way.
But the truth is the truth and we stick our noses in other people’s business all the time and say things like “it’s to protect our interests” (translated we want to take their stuff), or “it's to save American lives” (translated its to test out our capabilities and put the rest of the world on notice that we can take their stuff too).
Unfortunately for us right after we get done destroying some country because our war monger right wing nuts republicans were in power and did it, out bleeding socialist liberal democrats take power and go and rebuild their country again. What a waste of time, money and good bombs. So many people die, and in the end they hate us even more, and they kill our puppet regime, and the circle is complete except for a much higher level of hate for us.

Peaceful intervention to enable human rights in any country across the world is important. I have always believed that and always will.

Indeed, we should peaceably intervene by strategically taking out their military and leaving only the civilians behind. Then we can setup McDonald's hamburger stands throughout the country, thereby removing starvation from North Korea.

hey it worked in Iraq, didn't it?

That would be funny (it still made me laugh) if the real situation wasn't so awful.

I think it is just a puppet show... The USA is like a jealous and fat child which want to be the only one in the world who has dangerous toys, and the North Korea is very hungry child which want dangerous toys more than food and candies. And the UN is bad and drunk mother.
Both of countries are just playing in a puppet show throwing away taxes of their unhappy citizens.

3 nukes on container ships - 1 on each coast, then one either in the gulf or Lake Michigan, can pop off while still in their ascent phase (less than 2 minutes), cause an EMP blast, wipe out our electrical grid and most unprotected electronic devices throughout the country, and we are literally back in the 1800s. 75% of our population would be dead on 2 months, especially if it happened in winter. Even a single nuke above Lake Michigan or the Gulf is enough to wipe out 1/2 our country, not even counting any fallout deaths and mutations. We are not feared any more, like we were when Reagan or either Bush was president. They laugh at us when they attack with impunity, and we send the FBI in 2 months later to investigate.

You want to deter a bully, make it to painful for him to even remotely threaten you. Peace through strength is the only thing they remotely understand. Just ask Neville Chamberlain.

Why does the UN have to be a bad and drunk mother and not a father? Most of the world's rulers are men? Just a thought.

Hence why we have to run naked through airports. How free are we again..... Neville Chamberlain... That snivering idiot.... After the English and the French and Woodrow Wilson did what they did to Germany in WW1i n the final deal with the armistice I am amazed the Germans were so kind. They should have blown England directly off the earth.
It amazes me how propaganda presents to people and how people believe it...
Corregidor, MacArthur runs away under cover of night leaving his troops to die or be captured… I shall return... he says. Coward should have been there with the troops. But he is held up as a hero.
Latter the history books actually get re-written to make it look like he was under presidential orders to abandon his men…
Can you imagine, Patton or Rommel slipping away under cover of night?
People are people. They understand exactly the same things we understand. How many American bombs have fallen on North Korea? Can’t even count them… How many North Korean bombs have fallen on the USA? 0…
And you call them bullies…. When are we as a nation going to stop being so ignorant?

Your attitude pains me and yet you say people are people. Indeed. I think the best response I can give is this original draft of Wilfred Owen's poem written in the trenches. http://www.bl.uk/learning/timeline/large107430.html

DeletedUser2259

Yea... that poem... The pain, the GAS!!! Kinda like the children and women on Hiroshima and Nagasaki… Don’t you think?
.
Except they were not soldiers there. In fact there were no soldiers on either island.
.
People don’t make war, governments do. People allow governments to commit atrocities (all people in all countries), us too.
We do it because many of us are ignorant; we do it because most of us believe the propaganda sold to us by governments…

. “America does not torture”… Ooops… My bad…. IRAQ is our ally; let’s give Saddam Hussein weapons so he can attack the Iranians… Wait… Let’s also give the Iranians weapons secretly so we can take that money and support another uprising in South America… Ooops…”we did it again”. Waite why are the Iranians against us again…… Oh yes, the Shah… The puppet government we installed on their home land to do our bidding… who’d a thunk they would get so pissie about a thing like that…
.
Afghanistan lets arm Osama bin Laden so he can kick the USSR out of Afghanistan… NY Times calls Osama bin Laden a hero… while he does that lets invade his home land because we don’t like Saddam Hussein anymore, so now let’s get involved in a local skirmish because a woman from England who would later be declared insane, pushes Bush 1 into a war (another case of the tail wagging the dog). And on and on.
.
If any government anywhere in the world did ½ the things our government has done, we would be all up in arms all about how horrific those people would be, and on and on.
.
North Korea is a sovereign Nation. They are a people just as any other people. They have every right to want to arm themselves and be able to defend themselves. I seem to recall us invading them before... Oh… and…. Wasn’t it us who acting a resident God (after nuking Japan) decide to divide Korea along the 38th parallel thus creating the situation we have today….
.
Yes indeed, people are people, and when people are ignorant or blinded by propaganda, their governments run wild and kil all in the name, of freedom, or religion, or anything they can use to excuse their actions.
.
And if you have any doubts about what our governament has our youg men and women do, all in the name of "our interestes in the area". Maybe this will mean something to you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLic1Y3re-A Wanna tell me again how my attitude pains you?

I take it back you are doing a good job in showing the horrors of war and all that is done in its name. I must have misread you. I hear/see so many jingoistic warmongering speeches/text it turns my stomach as much as the video.

I hate that video. I hate it with everything I have. So much is so wrong there. People and children dying for NOTHING. Young American men being USED and brainwashed to murder in the name of the government. We train them as weapons, and we cannot MUST NOT ever blame them. They are there to kill, and kill they must. If we told our kids to go into battle with their hearts on their sleeve many more of them would die.
So our kids get brain damage, when those guys in the choppers get a little older they will have nightmares about what they have done.
Their kids are dead.
The world hates us a little more.
The day we turn our back on Iraq, the people there will kill everyone in the government we have installed. Just as in Vietnam we will see images on TV of choppers evaluating the last people we can while the Iraqis move in to kill anyone who even remotely had anything to do with us.
People like George Bush, I & II, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton keep lying to us. I guess none of them actually knows what the definition of "is" actually is.
In the end the thing I hate the most about that video (and all the other things) is how it has taken America away from all of us. That thing we (all people) believed America stood for not too long ago.

I don't see N.Korea as an imminent threat to anyone through direct conventional weaponry...unless that threat, ie. fissible material or nuclear tech is being exported out to other nations for $, which is more probable than not.

The people of N.Korea have been abandoned by the international community's policies of isolation and disengagement, and that's the real shame of it all, because the leadership live like lords, and the populace festers in squalor with the rest of the world patting themselves on the back for the oh so great strategy of 'teaching them a lesson' through sanctions.
