You have to enter PvP tournaments, which are accessible only after you conquer the province with an image of a wooden tower on it.

The wooden tower is the PvP tower. Once you conquer the province that holds the PvP tower, you are able to compete in a contest.

Please note that the position of the towers is the same for everybody while the goods deposits and other items available on the continent map are placed randomly.

My best advice to anyone new trying to advance through territories and PVP tournies is to build 2 spear fighter barracks and that should be able to get you to the Iron age PVP tower and all the territories on the between... with a little thought you can defeat everything.
When you can get archers build 2 archer barracks and you will be able to use them the same way.
Also note that spear fighters should be positioned on bushes if possible for defense bonuses and archers on rocks for attack bonuses
