Hmm...theoretically, an infinite number. If a batter swings and misses at the third strike but the catcher drops it, the batter must be thrown out at first base. If he reaches safely, the pitcher is still credited with a strikeout. So that could go on forever...

Correct, although I was hoping it would take longer for someone to think about that scenario.
