[Guide] The Power of the Oceanic Future Blacksmith

DeletedUser27525

Introduction
In Oceanic Future, there are 3 recurring quests that ask you to finish 6 24-h productions of any age. The blacksmith is the smallest and cheapest production building to fulfill the quests. Is it worth then to have a city full of blacksmiths in OF? (This strategy has already been discussed elsewhere, e.g. Cosmic Raven's HQS condensed and What's With All the Blacksmiths?. The purpose of this guide is to provide data.)

Before VF came out, it was possible to have the 3 simultaneous 24-h quests after completing the story quest. Here we assume the player can only get 2 24-h quests.

Base reward of a blacksmith
We first assess the performance of a blacksmith without quest reward boost from Chateau Frontenac. Since 6 blacksmiths fulfill 2 quests, the reward of 1 blacksmith is only worth 1/3, which corresponds to:
  • 1.67 FP (7.14%)
  • 0.33 BP (7.14%)
  • 433 medals (7.14%)
  • 23,333 coins (14.29%)
  • 73,333 coins (7.14%)
  • 21,667 supplies (14.29%)
  • 66,667 supplies (7.14%)
  • 1.67 goods (35.72%)
The blacksmith can now be regarded as a 2x2 random production building. The base reward does not look great, but with a sufficiently high level CF, blacksmiths can perform better than a goods building/terrace farm, as we examine below.

Blacksmith with reward boost
The reward boost of CF beyond level 10 is equal to
(L-10) x 0.05 + 2.5
where L is the level of CF. This boost factor is multiplied into the base reward in the previous section. Note that FP and BP rewards are not affected by CF boost.

1. Benchmark against goods building
A typical goods building in OF occupies 30 tiles with a daily production rate of 20-30 goods. A blacksmith occupies 4 tiles. Including roads, 6 blacksmiths occupy almost the same space as a goods building. The daily goods production of a blacksmith is equal to
5 goods x Boost x Probability of receiving goods from quest
= Round(5 x [(L-10) x 0.05 + 2.5]) x 35.72%
where Round() means round to nearest integer.

The result is plotted below as a function of L. The step-like behavior is caused by the fact that the goods reward increases only every 4 levels of CF due to rounding. The dashed lines in the figure correspond to the normalized production rates of 20 goods/day and 30 goods/day of a goods building. (The 1/6 factor accounts for the effective size ratio of blacksmith versus goods building.) Therefore, we see that:
  • To match a 20 goods/day production rate from a goods building, CF needs to be at level 70.
  • To match a 30 goods/day production rate from a goods building, CF needs to be at level 126.
This does not mean, however, that a level 70 CF is a minimum requirement since goods only account for 35.72% of the rewards. You will receive many other rewards on the side!

blacksmith_OF.png

(Note that if you're able to get 3 loop quests at the same time, the rewards are multiplied by another factor of 1.5.)

2. Benchmark against terrace farm
A TF can be used to produce goods or FPs. The analysis presented in previous section applies to the former case as well. In the latter case, we use TFs to fulfill recurring quests (RQ), and 6 TFs would give
6 TFs: 30 FP + 2 RQ
On the other hand, for the same space (6 blacksmiths for 1 TF),
36 blacksmiths: 12 RQ (+ negligible supplies)
So the comparison is whether
12 RQ > 30 FP + 2 RQ
i.e.
1 RQ > 3 FP.
Now 1 RQ = 1/14 x 5 FP + 5/14 x CF-boosted goods + other rewards (ignored). Substituting into the above equation,
1/14 x 5 FP + 5/14 x CF-boosted goods > 3 FP
CF-boosted goods > 7.4 FP.

At Lv 70 CF, for instance, you receive 28 CF-boosted goods, which are worth more than 7.4 FPs in many newer worlds. In other words, you could earn more FPs by selling the OF goods you get from blacksmiths than producing FPs directly with TFs.

Let r denote the rate of OF goods (in units of FP/good). Then we need
r > 7.4 / CF-boosted goods
for blacksmiths to outperform TFs. We see that this would depend on
  1. the level of CF; and
  2. the rate of OF goods in your world.
(Note that a similar analysis can be done for 3 simultaneous 24-h RQs. The condition becomes 1 RQ > 2 FP, or equivalently, r > 4.6 / CF-boosted goods.)

The following figure shows the critical rate of OF goods as a function of CF level. If you lie in the region above the curve, the blacksmith strategy is better. Otherwise, you are better off with TFs.

blacksmith_OF_rate.png

Conclusions

The blacksmith strategy is not for everyone but can be worthwhile if the following criteria are met:
  • You are in OF and you can get at least 2 of the 24-h RQs simultaneously. (Production rate is halved if you only have 1, such as in VF.)
  • You have a high-level CF. (I recommend Lv 50+.)
  • You don't mind clicking/tapping hundreds of times on the blacksmiths every day.
  • You have goods buildings and/or TF for goods production, in which case replacing goods buildings with blacksmiths would easily outperform.
  • You use TF to produce FPs and the value of 1 RQ is greater than 3 FP in your world, in which case replacing TFs with blacksmiths would outperform provided that you can sell OF goods for FPs.
The number of blacksmiths should be a multiple of 6.

That's a lot of work. To bad you are missing the main point.

Conclusions
The blacksmith strategy is not for everyone but can be worthwhile if the following criteria are met:
  • You are in OF and you can get at least 2 of the 24-h loop quests simultaneously. (Production rate is halved if you only have 1, such as in VF.)
  • You have goods buildings and/or use TF to produce goods.
  • You have a high-level CF. (I recommend Lv 50+.)
  • You don't mind clicking/tapping hundreds of times on the blacksmiths every day.
  • The number of blacksmiths should be a multiple of 6.

The Terrace Farm on a 24h cycle does not produce goods, but produces fps. Therefore it is stupid to replace it with blacksmiths.

I think you may be missing the point that in some of the newer worlds OF goods are still quite expensive. I'm from W where 20 OF goods are worth much more than 5 fps. I earn more fps by selling goods instead of producing fps directly with TF.

On the other hand, I never said that people should replace all their TFs with blacksmiths. I'm simply using a typical 30-tile goods building as the benchmark. This may or may not include TF, depending on whether you use it as a goods building. If you use TFs to produce fps, keep them.

TF can produce 20-30 goods per day. I never said it produced goods on the 24-h production option.

Then why this?

Conclusions
The blacksmith strategy is not for everyone but can be worthwhile if the following criteria are met:

You have goods buildings and/or use TF to produce goods.

Does that make sense to you?

One has nothing to do with the other.

In VF you can do 3 RQ's that ask for a 6x24h production. Do those with 6 TF's throw in a Blue Galaxy and you will score 60 fp plus the proceeds of the RQ's. You got to be a complete idiot to do it with blacksmiths.

Hell, you would even be better of if you do it with 6 sunken treassures.

DeletedUser27525

Let's do the math then.
6 TFs = 30 FP + 2 RQ
For the same space:
36 blacksmiths = 12 RQ (+ negligible supplies)
So the comparison is whether
12 RQ > 30 FP + 2 RQ
10 RQ > 30 FP
(Similarly, if you can get 3 24h RQs simultaneously the comparison is whether 15 RQ > 30 FP.)

The answer depends. With a Lv 70 CF, 10 RQs would give
10 x 5/14 x 28 = 100 OF goods (+ other rewards)
In many newer worlds 100 OF goods are worth more than 30 FPs. As you said you could use BG to double to 60 FP or do better with ST. I agree and that's fine (but mind you 100 OF goods cost more than 60 FP in some worlds), which is why I already mentioned this strategy is not for everyone. You'll need to do the math depending on your city and the rate of OF goods in your world. If you’re not a goods seller you can forget it.

EDIT: I've separated out the benchmark against goods buildings and that against TF into 2 sections.

In VF you can do 3 RQ's that ask for a 6x24h production.
This is false.

You got to be a complete idiot to do it with blacksmiths.
I'd be more entertained if you're capable of arguing with data and math.

This is false.

Correct. I meant OF.

I'd be more entertained if you're capable of arguing with data and math.

You argue with data and math and what it comes down to is that you have to be in a newer world, you have to do the math based on your city and the rate of OF goods in your world and you have to be a good seller. You can hardly call that fixed data.

What you are doing is saying you wrote a guide and if it does not work for you, the problem is not the guide, but you are just in the wrong world, or not a good enough seller.

I don't think you've read my guide carefully.

In Part 1, which is the original version of my guide, I show the condition where blacksmith outperforms goods building. This depends only on the level of CF. If you've power leveled your CF you'll definitely do better with blacksmiths than goods building. It has nothing to do with world, selling goods, etc.

Then you brought up using TFs for 24h RQ, which is a fair point. And so I added Part 2 to examine the condition under which blacksmith outperforms TF. Unlike Part 1 where we can just compare goods output, here we have to compare goods (from blacksmith RQ) and FPs (from TF). Hence Part 2 depends on both the level of CF and the rate of OF goods in your world. Blacksmiths would still outperform in a wide region as shown in Fig 2.

If you don't have TFs, Part 2 would be irrelevant. The take-away message is simply that blacksmiths outperform goods buildings. And if you also don't have goods buildings, this guide is not applicable to you.

I don't have good buildings, so yet again another criterium that determines who the guide is not for.

You wrote it, you are all about math and data, so who is your target group?

You just answered your own question. Players who have goods buildings should consider replacing them with blacksmiths paired with a high-level CF.
