If you remove someone from your friends list do they know it? I don't want to hurt their feeling I just want to be treated fairly. Some of them I think might have even quit. I tried to send them a message but they don't answer. I have people on my friends list that I P/M everyday but I never hear from. One of them, I haven't heard from in I don't know how long, polished one of my building (finally) and then tried to solicit me for their Guild.

They get a notification in their event log, yes. Personally I wouldn't worry too much over it --- I've removed players in the past and players have removed me in the past with no shared messages. You keep your friends list as it suits you, that's its main purpose in my opinion, your own benefit.
