Stuck on Battle

I was cruising along nicely winning every battle and then hit my 4th area and I'm stuck. I'm in the Badakus area fighting swordsman and bowman. When they first move I notice they get a +4 shield...

All I can produce are spearmen and slingers...do I need new units to beat these battles? I just hit the first tier of research in the 2nd age...

Without military boost from gbs you will generally need same age troops to fight on the continental map at low ages. Unlock better troops and advancing will get easier.
