I've got AO and now wondering: can I see somewhere these hits when I do auto battles? Or is it just for manual fighting?

You'll only see the effect in manual battles, but it works in autobattles too.

Whatever damage you could do without the AO, (calling it 100% of damage for clarity) when AO hit is added ups that damage to 150% instead of 100%
Eventually the ability to get to"One hit Kill"with the AO hit is the goal for most player leveling up AO

The AO also works for your city defense. You can see it work in the movie produced when your city is attacked.
