They aren't random, I got another Checkmate Square in Vingrid after placing 1 in Mount Killmore.
Defeating those 90% boosted Grenadiers in CA GE level 4 rewarded me so many diamonds, so I won't worry about not having enough since my Mount Killmore city is already full of stuffs.
