Most of the Holiday portraits are of stylized characters or themed to the holiday/event. The 'historical' portraits were often acquired during specialty events such as the now-defunct Carniversay or Archaelogical Event. Once that digging game was introduced many portraits were available as prizes and you had an opportunity to gain ones from all sorts of previous events that you didn't already have in your inventory.

Psst. As far as I know Inno claims that there are no portraits of 'real' people! Don't tell them you found Jim! ;)

There are many avatars based on real people. For example, "Marilyn Monroe" or "Albert Einstein". Most were released during the Historical Questlines.
