I've already searched to no avail, so I'll ask a noob question. Is there somewhere a chart showing what all the symbols, (mainly the red and blue swords and shields) and what they mean, or do we have to guess as we go along? I've been playing this game for 8 months now , and I still dont have a clue. Thanks in advance.......

Red Sword = Attack boost for Attacking Army (GvG, GbG, GE, PvP, Neighbors)
Red Shield = Defense boost for Attacking Army (GvG, GbG, GE, PvP, Neighbors)
Blue Sword = Attack boost for City (defending) Army
Blue Shield = Defense boost for City (defending) Army

Defense counts in PvP arena , if you have no defense or a really low defense and lose when attacked then you lose points and ranking. This can happen many times during the day.

This seems to be an old thread, but I am not a nobody, but I finally decided to investigate what the symbols actually mean in the PvP Arena. I am gonna copy and paste my message from FOE to make it easier to understand what I am asking. Here it is below:

I have an ignorant question. I understand what offense and defense is, but the rest is difficult, but the PvP whatever in the city has confused me and I am not understanding why I am getting creamed by this guy when I attack. Can someone explain basic crap to an ignorant fool?

Ok...First of all we are both in SAJM. I decided to fight with the abysmal gliders like he has. His stats are (shield with green arrow and faded out swords) 4154. My stats are with the swords and green arrow, faded out swords, 5334 and faded out shield, 4006. The shield with the green arrow are, faded swords, 3715 and faded shield, 3460. I have not a clue what that stuff means, but while looking tonight, I am assuming the shield with the green arrow has something to do with it. My stats under the green arrow/swords are higher than his, but I just get creamed by him continually when I chose him to attack. What do I need to do? Is there a video to help me understand? Also, what the heck do the faded out symbols mean? Please can someone help me to understand?

Troop formations take on a more complex role in the PVP arena...

Copied from Wiki:
-
"It is important to note that, like when fighting in Continent Maps, the defending units in PvP Arena will NOT attack Rogues first. That means if the attacking player has regular units in addition of rogues, the regular units will be attacked or killed before the rogues."

Gopher has a very heavy defense.
So, I am guessing I need to locate buildings that have blue defense and attacks. To, ummmm, try to minimize the hits with defense (blue shields) and fighting back (blue swords) when his attacking army hits me? Or just the defense? Are the blue swords for when someone choses me to attack and I fight him like Gopher fights me?

First of all, if you're attacking him then blue boosts aren't going to help you, red boosts might. Yes, the blue boosts are what are used if he chooses you to attack, if you're choosing to attack him it's your red boosts that matter.
If you're auto battling, try manually fighting and see if that makes a difference. With stats that close, auto is not a good idea.
Next, if he's using gliders don't use gliders yourself, figure out what unit or combination of units has an advantage against gliders and use that instead. Don't use Rogues in PVP Arena! As @WillyTwoShoes points out, they don't get attacked first in PVP Arena.

Look at your screen shot, The player Gopher's defense is 4154/4862 and your attack is 5339/4011. When you attack them your 5339 is vs their 4862 defense on defense which is very close and your defense of 4011 is vs their 4154 attack on defense. Now can you see how you can lose easily against them ? Never autofight when you are this close for sure.

I think you mean never auto fight when you are this close.

This is "a little bit of everything" icon. You want buildings with this one. 1747605128741.png1747605128741.png

if this is, say 50% in the buildings reward section, then EACH of the items (red sword, red shield, blue sword, blue shield ...) EACH GET 50% boost.

Inno has quickly started adding venue specific boost icons. SO this icon, without a venue showing, is for ALL venues: GbG, GE, PvP, PvP Arena, CMAP fighting, Ally (Heroic Taverne), etc.

So it helps you basically everywhere. No specific venue boost icons are what you covet. They work on everything (for the most part).

Sorry for the crappy image resolution, but I think you get enough of the image design to know it's helpful on all 4 basic boost metrics.

Now this icon, for example, is RED SHIELD for ONLY GBG fighting 1747605756648.png , so you get the boost, but - it ONLY works in GbG. The green banner attached in the lower right hand corner, is the GbG emblem banner for war boosts:

I tend to describe these boosts as a players core muscle group and this is why I still advocate for the value of some great buildings such as the Zeus, Observatory, and Terracotta Army. In my limited experience I have found them the most value oriented way to raise new players aggregate fight totals, for the guild across the board, is leveling those as fast as possible.
