continental map wars

Why is when I attempt to win a battle in the continental map I have to fight two battles with the same army so I loose a lot? Why can't I just fight the one battle?

They did it to add some level of difficulty to the game, I suppose. Increase your attack boosts (attacker's defense matters too) and keep trying. You should be using rogues as well.

Looks like you should be able to add people in the second war but I guess that is the point to make it difficult to win.

It helps offset the advantage you have in seeing what types of units the defending army has and thus picking your troops accordingly.

The other advantage you have is: fighting battles manually gives an advantage over the AI fighting the battle for the defense.
