I started playing AD&D in 1982. The modern version is owned and designed by Hasbro (Wizards of the Coast is owned by) and it plays that way. Get retro with your friends and go find 2nd edition.

I started playing in 1978, so AD&D 1st Ed. Played 2nd Ed for a couple of years when it first came out. So of course I agree with stymie, 2nd Ed is the way to go.

I have too many stories for this forum. I'll just advise you to hope you get a good DM and have fun. There's nothing quite like tabletop role-playing.
