How do ya'll keep playing this game for years after years?

Just popped on out of pure curiosity-

How do ya'll keep playing this game for years after years? What makes it so fun? Guild Expeditions? Guild vs Guild? Guild Battlefields? Events? Personally, for the longest time, I was hooked on Guild Expeditions. Just a little thought for food.

making farms and increasing my diamond amount has kept me in the game. I originally quit my main world 2 years ago and switched my play style to farming worlds and played kinda casual for the first year and a half and came back... less stressful and I get to meet a lot of players and different guilds!

When I have enough diamonds to get to PE in one day I'll go back to having the main world and make all my farms automative (passive diamond income) but until then I have ALOT of work to do! It's hard but doing it every day makes it a little easier and keeps me motivated to continue.

The social aspect is huge. So are variable rewards. Rewards given on an unpredictable schedule are habit-forming. That's been known and used since the 1950s, by casinos, game designers, and others. Search terms: "Skinner" "variable rewards"

Me, I'm pretty new to the game. Only started playing last year. I took a break for 2 months, but came back. It's the casualness that keeps drawing me back here again and again. Games that are super competitive makes me stressed, but this, I can choose how to play. I do whatever I choose, and THAT'S what is so hooking about it.

It's like a soft drug to me... it keeps me somewhat entertained yet I am not stuck at my PC till 2 or 3 am.
I think Inno made it perfect. I do not want to be stuck at my PC till 3 am. The game is perfectly balanced so that I can't play for more than 1 hour in a row. After the collections and the fighting, I need to wait 1-2 hours for the next collection, meanwhile I also need to wait for my troops to heal up. For parents, they will LOVE this game because their kids will be FORCED to take a break. It's hooking enough to play every day, yet not addicting (which is bad for your health). This is what I LOVE about the game too :)

Everyones different. I came to FOE when only thing to do was build your city, fight 75 neighbors for a few medals and do the continental map. I was easily bored by the monotonous gameplay and slow progress. I left a few times and came back hoping for improvements. A new world would open up every few months to get a fresh start, this was nice. The game has improved very well over the years with keeping gamers interested by providing opportunities to speed up progress, without buying diamonds. I like the events and I enjoyed getting a fresh start on the newest world. Unfortunately the newest world is almost a year and a half old and statistically the game does not seem to have enough influx of new players sticking around long enough to justify opening any new worlds. Maybe it's because new players are getting slammed everyday by a neighbor with +500 attack. I would love to play and even put a few bucks in but not on worlds where my neighbors had years head start over me. I keep checking in once a week for just maybe a new world opens up, but statistically I doubt it. So I must bid fair well again, time to find a better game.
