Question about city defense

I have a question about how to use the Army Management Screen for city defense. I understand that to be assigned to the defending army each unit has to be highlighted in blue. But should that unit be left in the Unit Pool at the bottom of the screen, or should it be moved to the Currently Selected Army at the top of the screen?

If you are using them for defense it doesn't matter where they are as long as they are selected (highlighted in blue). If you move them into the currently selected army section, the next battle you fight they will be used as the attacking army.
