[Question] robots?

I have a question, if it has been asked before a thousand pardons. on the main forum page there is a block that shows how many members on line, how many guests and how many robots. what is a robot?

It's a program from Google and the like that runs all over the web, recording and indexing web sites. (At least that's what I know it as.)

More like recording site info, getting data, etc.
Google doesn't care what we do as long as we stay on the web and don't hurt anybody.
I wondered what "Robots" were too, I figured it had to be something along the lines of what Jaelis mentioned.

Indexing: they "read" the pages so when you search on google, yahoo, bing, etc for specific words they know there are to be found here.
