Shield percentage

my shield percentage is 110%. When defending my city my units get destroyed just as easy as if they had no shield.

Can someone please explain to me how it works?

As far as i know 110% would make you almost indestructible but i guess this is not the case in game.

Two factors: Are the attacking armies of a higher age than you are? And what bonus does your attacker have? If so, they'll likely defeat a lower age even with the 110% bonus. Second, the AI just isn't that smart. If I fight manually, I can routinely beat same age armies with even a 200% bonus on them.
