They have so many cards to create a bottleneck at the top and force the top players to spend a lot of diamonds to stay there.

I ended up #100 something with 30,000 points or so in the middle of Silver league, so not at the top, and still thought it was ridiculous. I did it this once to help build up my new city, but won't repeat it next time that mechanic appears.

The results must vary across worlds. My main is on T and I ended up #27 in the middle of the Gold League with only 31,601 points. For the entire event I just did enough to remain in the Gold League. I did spend 1,020 diamonds but that's fewer than I usually spend and I got a nice collection of good daily specials. YMMV
