Use of Medals

I have heard several different and contradictory things about how to use medals in the game. Can you trade them for expansions? Can someone list what you can use medals for in December 2016?

Lets see:
1. Exchange them for expansions ("victory expansions")
2. Buy extra attempts in GE
3. Donate to your guild, where they can pay for sieges and defense slots in all-ages gvg.

Anything else I'm missing?

Yup.. I don't knw for sure but it seems every time I have 4 crew 1 costs 500 medals rather than goods. Only reason I can see paying the extra goods is if it gives you the ability to provide enough repair that you save 50 goods.

OK you definitely have to pick the crew with the medal cost or you'll wind up paying the extra 25 goods.
