do units allocated to defence (and so marked blue) have to be physically moved to the active army section (section 1) in order for them to automatically fight in a defensive battle?

if I mark units in blue on the pool (section 4) they have the expected bonus symbol on them, however, if I move them to the selected army the symbols disappear and I am no longer sure if the bonus applies or not, or, more importantly, if they will fight if not in the selected army section

Also what would happen if you have more than 8 units allocated to defence, will the computer pick 8 random ones, 8 of the same age as the attacker or the 8 "best" units?

You can mark up to 8 units as defense for your city. If you mark none (or if you use them to attack someone and they're all lost), you will be given the default defense: 2 spearmen, regardless of the age of your city or what barracks you have. These units will not appear in your Army Management screen.

You do not have to do anything other than mark your units to have them defend your city; if you move them to the upper left quadrant, you are adding them to your attacking army, which is why their city defense bonuses from watchfires, etc. no longer show. They will still be in your defensive army if they remain in blue, but you can lose them if you use them to attack, and they will then no longer be in your defense force either.

The system can only show your units with one set of boosts. If you place them in the active slots, they are shown with the boosts as your attacking army. If they are down in the pool and marked as defense, they are shown with the boosts of your defensive army, otherwise they are shown without a boost. Units in the active slots, that are also marked as defensive armies will get the appropriate boosts depending on how they are being used at the moment. Note, if damaged on an attack, they will be weakened while on defense too.

For your other question, you can't put more than 8 on town defense. Once you have 8 on defense, you can't add another until you take one of those off defense.

However, the key to defeating provinces with very high bonuses is to have the exact right type of troop to defeat them. For example, fast troops are very vulnerable to light troops. Heavy troops are very vulnerable to ranged troops (not artillery). In addition, try to get decent bonuses from great buildings, and if the fight is still too tough wait until you can fight it with troops of a higher age.

Question: is there a guide somewhere that shows the relationship of what types of troops are vulnerable to other troops - this would be very helpful.
For instance what types of troops are light troops vulnerable to? And what about artillery are they vulnerable to anything?

Army bonuses vs another unit type, terrain bonuses.

Light --> Fast, in Bush/Forest
Heavy --> Light, on Plains
Fast --> Ranged, no terrain bonus
Ranged --> Heavy, on Rocks
Artillery --> Heavy, on Hills

No unit type has an attack bonus vs Artillery, but Artillery has horrible defense.

At higher ages:

Light --> immune to distance attack, when in Forest
Artillery --> dug in lessens distance attack damage

Not sure about other defensive bonuses

New army management

The new army management screen is a more efficient way to manage your units. Now, you can mark units to defend your city, but unlike before, they can now also be used in attack.

1. Currently selected army. Units you select from your unit pool (at the bottom of the screen) will be placed into your current army.
2. Defending units. If the enemy's defenses are visible, they are shown here.
3. Units with a blue surround are marked to defend your city. Clicking this blue defensive helmet will activate the defending army selector, which can be toggled on and off. When active, click any unit to add/remove it from your defending army.
4. This is your unit pool, where your available units are kept. As before, you can filter between different unit types. Defensive units always appear at the front of the pool, for easier location.
5. An additional filter has also been added. You can now choose to display only units from a specific age in your unit pool.
6. You can activate the heal unit icon to heal any units you select.
7. Delete units using this option.
It would be nice if we could label or name our military buildings as we build them so when we go into battle and set up our army, we don't end up using all four from one building, and none from the other 3, so that when we have to retrain them, we aren't training all our dead units from one building one after the other. It would be nice to be able to pick one guy from each bldg so when they are dead we can retrain 3 or 4 guys in 3 or 4 buildings at the same time.

Probably make more sense to start a new string than reply to something posted more than 3 Years ago.
