Some pay with what we call money, and other with their time.
Just think for few seconds what would happen if all those who are not "paying customers" left all "Free to Play" "Games" ...
Empty servers, and ppl that ARE spending small fortunes, whould not continue to do that any more.
It is not that games can not live on sub.They could.But they can get MUCH more in micro transactions, with bonus rationalisation that they are giving free service to some (large) number of ppl.So they even get to feel good about themself.
Win win, as they say.

I'm sorry, but this makes no sense as written, and is full of assumptions about possible future actions with no logical basis. First, why would non-paying customers leave a free to play game en masse? And even if they did, if the paying customers stayed, there would be no reason to change the model to a subscription basis. That would only make sense if some of the paying customers left and there was a cash flow problem. Third, you imply that they make more with the current model than they would if it were a subscription game, but there is no way to even guess as to whether that would be true or not.

In any case, you are not paying anything with your time. You are using resources paid for by others with their cash. Period.
