What happens to the medals and forge points I earn when I help a friend level up a great building?
They don't add to my medals or forge points.

The forge points go into your inventory, in the form of FP packs, not into your Forge Point bar.
Medals are added to your medal stock.
You only get them once the Great Building reaches the next level.

If you've secured a reward spot, the FPs go into your inventory as FP packs, the medals are added to your total. When a GB you've donated to levels, it is recorded in your Events History so you can then go back to look and see if you did indeed secure a reward spot.
