So by having watchfires instead of victory towers you are missing out on over 25,000 medals weekly.
Considering medals let you finish off your expansions and contribute to all ages gvg it's quite significant production to be missing out on imo.
If you don't care about your guild's gvg then more power to you. But here is something else to illustrate my point, that watchfires are a waste unless you are willing to go to 500%:

The guild I am a member of, does not GvG to any real extent, if at all.
I sure don't... GvG is costly.

He may be talking about the cost to maintain sufficient troops to set sieges, fight and supply defense armies, none of which would be covered by those GBs. Alcatraz helps, but you still need many barracks, which would take more room than his Watchfires.get obs/atom/arc THEY WORK

As always, I look at the Big Picture.
The cost in troops, goods, space in my city to support a military complex, etc...
It's too much for me to GvG.
Or to hunt Tower Points from my neighbors.
That's what I had to let go.
I like my Heavy Production City.
18 Goods buildings.
11 Supply buildings.
Over 100 Forge Points a day from my city alone.
Tiny Military complex that requires no population or happiness to support.
11 Unattached Champions and Rogues every day.
Enthusiastic without Polish.
Tough City Defense to beat.
Medals suffer, and that's what I had to give up.
As @Dursland correctly pointed out.
I placed my last medals expansion about three or four weeks ago.
I gain a lot of medals from Events when available.
This week I'm doing well again with the Towers.
This isn't going to last long, so I'm will cook while the Skillet is Hot.
My neighbors are delightful and I'm blessed to rub elbows with them.
To me, it's all about balance.
And showing love, respect and peace to my fellow citizens on Beautiful Rugnir.

That would make rogues completely pointless, but no I wouldn't vote against it.
I'd just end up using an army of 6 to 8 full on units like I do on continent map. No biggie.
Sometimes I actually do better there because I'm able to hit everything first turn.

This is me right now in LMA: most "attackers" run after the 1st salvo (but after any attempted attack I swap defenders around so they get no pattern on me).
